The primary function of the throttle body is to control the airflow into the engine. It serves as a gateway between the air intake system and the engine's intake manifold. The throttle body houses a throttle plate or butterfly valve that opens and closes based on driver input (via the accelerator pedal) or commands from the engine control unit (ECU).

Operation

When the driver presses the accelerator pedal, it controls the throttle position sensor (TPS), which sends signals to the ECU. The ECU then commands the throttle body to open or close the throttle plate accordingly. This action regulates the amount of air entering the engine, which in turn affects engine speed and power output.


Construction

Throttle bodies are typically made of metal (such as aluminum) and consist of:

- Throttle Plate: A flat or circular plate mounted on a shaft within the throttle body. It rotates to control airflow.

- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS): Mounted on the throttle body, it detects the position of the throttle plate and sends this information to the ECU.

- Idle Air Control Valve (IACV): Some throttle bodies incorporate an IACV to regulate engine idle speed by adjusting air bypass around the throttle plate.

- Engine Performance: The throttle body directly influences engine performance by controlling air intake. A properly functioning throttle body ensures smooth acceleration, responsive throttle control, and consistent engine power.

- Rough Idle: Fluctuations or instability in engine idle speed.

- Check Engine Light: Illuminated due to throttle-related issues or sensor malfunctions.

 

Cleaning and Inspection

Cleaning the throttle body involves removing it from the intake manifold, spraying throttle body cleaner onto the throttle plate and interior surfaces, and wiping away deposits with a clean cloth or brush. Care should be taken not to damage sensitive components or disrupt calibration.
